Stress in the workplace causes millions of pounds of lost productivity in industry annually. While Western practitioners concentrate on treating symptoms, the Eastern philosophy of 'prevention rather than cure' saw massage chairs incorporated into Japanese office environments. Unfortunately early attempts were unsuccessful.

Design Stream's critique of existing massage chairs highlighted areas where they were unsuitable for the office environment. These included complex controls, long massage programs and users' inability to relax while others were hard at work.

Following prolonged in-depth observation, Design Stream conceived the standing massage, which would better integrate into the work break pattern. The project demonstrates how design can be used to reinvigorate existing technologies to make them more relevant to evolving marketplaces.
